光と闇が互いを飲み込もうとして渦を巻いている。
古代中国の思想である陰陽太極図から着想を得た。
破壊と再生を繰り返す永遠の生命を表現している。
これを最初に発想したのは、2011年3月であった。
電力を断たれた街は光を失い、夜の闇に覆われた。
しかし、天を見上げると空いっぱいに星が見える。
暗闇の中にいると、見えなかった光が見えてくる。
生は死に転じ、死は生に転じる、自然界の摂理だ。
私は、真っ暗な静寂の中で考えた、そして祈った。
復興を導く光になり得る作品を描きたいと思った。
この絵の構図は、渦巻きの回転に沿って展開する。
草花は、春夏秋冬の季節のサイクルを表している。

Light and darkness whirl, attempting to swallow one another.
This is a work inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophy of Pinyin Taijitu.
It expresses life as eternity – repetitions of destruction and regeneration.
The idea for the work came to me first in March 2011.
The city had electric power cut off, lightless and covered with the darkness of night.
Yet looking up into the sky, light that had been invisible appeared.
Life turns to death, and death to life – the logic of nature.
In the stillness of the pure darkness I contemplated, and prayed.
I wanted to create work that could light the way to recovery.
The composition of this painting develops in a whirling circle.
The plants and flowers are the seasonal cycle of spring, summer, fall, and winter.

20年以上前の出来事である。
ある夜、旅行から帰宅して、疲れて眠ってしまった。
翌朝早く目が覚めると、庭で謎の白い物体が動いている。
それは見たこともない奇妙な鳥らしき生き物である。
私はその鳥と格闘の末、捕獲に成功した。
鳥は中国原産の鶏、烏骨鶏だった。
ウコ吉と名付け、我が家で飼うことにした。
冠のような白い鬣たてがみ、恐竜のような青い脚、力が強く、とても賢い。
ウコ吉は不思議な鳥である、いつ、どこからやってきたのだろう？
庭で遊ぶウコ吉を見ていると、その姿は仮の姿のように思えてくる。
人々が寝静まった夜、月の光を浴びたウコ吉が、鳳凰に変身して飛び立って行く姿を想像した。

One night, more than 20 years ago, I came home from a trip and fell asleep, exhausted.
Upon waking the next day, I found a mysterious white bird that I’d never seen before in the garden.
After a struggle, I managed to capture it.
It was a silky fowl, a bird native to China.
I named it Ukokichi and kept it at home.
The bird had a white mane with blueish legs like a dinosaur, and it was strong and very smart.
Where had such a mysterious bird come from?
Could its present form be a temporary manifestation?
I imagined it at night, bathed in moonlight, transforming into a phoenix and flying away.
