西川 慎 Makoto Nishikawa
1972年神奈川県生まれ。1996年富山市立富山ガラス造形研究所研究科を修了、同研究所に勤務。2001年「現代ガラス展INおのだ」で大賞受賞後、2003年に山口県に移住し工房を設立。サントリー美術館やマンダリンオリエンタル浦東 上海など、国内外に作品を制作設置。2022年山口県文化功労者賞を受賞。
Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1972, he graduated from the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in 1996 and won the Grand Prize at the Sanyo Onoda Contemporary Glass Art Exhibition in Onoda in 2001. He has exhibited in Japan and abroad, including at the Suntory Museum of Art and Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai.

私のガラス工房の前には、瀬戸内の蒼く静かな海が広がり、美しい夕日がゆっくりと沈んでいきます。海の上を吹き抜ける風や、水の流れ、海岸に打ち寄せられた流木や貝殻。そこに芽吹く草木や、舞い降りた鳥の羽を拾い集めながら、それら一つ一つに刻まれた深い歴史や記憶を感じています。
その記憶をたどり、少しずつ手元に集めていくことで、私の作品は生まれていきます。脈々と流れる時間の経過や、荘厳で不思議な力を持つ自然の表情−その「記憶」を、作品を通して感じ取っていただけたらと願っています。
また、私にとって制作とは、「創造」や「表現」よりも前に、まず「敏感な受信者」であることだと考えています。目に見えるものも、見えないものも、あらゆる「ものごと」に静かに耳を傾けること。小さな、ささやくような声も聞き逃さない注意深さと、逆に、聞く必要のないことを正しく見極める判断力。そうした感性と意志を信じることが、作品の密度を深め、作家としての自分自身を支えてくれているのです。
In front of my studio, the sunset stretches out over the calm blue waters of the Seto Inland Sea as the wind blows across the sea with the flow of water and driftwood and seashells washed ashore. I hope that my works succeed in conveying these memories—the relentless passage of time and the majestic, mysterious expression of nature. To me, rather than being about creation or expression, art is first and foremost about being a sensitive receiver. Art is about quietly listening to all things, both visible and invisible, as well as the attentiveness to even the smallest, whispering voices, and conversely, the ability to correctly judge and discard what does not need to be heard. Such sensitivity and willpower add depth to my works and has nourished me as an artist.
