桐と鳳凰を取り合わせた《桐鳳凰図》は、平安や繁栄を象徴する吉祥画です。中国の古詩『千字文』の一節には、天下泰平の表れとして、桐の樹の上で鳳凰が鳴いている場面があります。鳳凰はめでたいことが起こる前に現れる伝説の鳥とされ、桐の木を好んで巣作りをするといわれているのです。
鳳凰のあでやかで美しい姿を表現するために、雲母きらによる箔仕上げに水干絵具を用いて、鮮やかな色合いと繊細な輝きを持つように描きました。

By combining a Paulownia tree and phoenix, this painting symbolizes peace and prosperity. The phoenix, a legendary bird appearing before auspicious events, is said to favor Paulownia trees to build nests. To emphasize the glorious beauty of the phoenix, mica foil and dried water pigments were used to create its vivid colors.

《麟鳳亀龍》は、平和な世界に現れると信じられていた四霊「麟鳳亀龍」をテーマとして、格天井に鳳凰、龍、麒麟、亀、そして四季の花などを制作いたしました。どちらも狩野派の華やかな画風や円山派の写生を重んじる描き方を参照しながら、生命力あふれる作品に仕上げました。

Qilin, Phoenix, Tortoise, and Dragon features the four holy beasts —believed to appear in peaceful times—as its theme. I recreated the four beasts and seasonal flowers on a coffered ceiling. Both works draw upon the vibrant style of the Kano school and the emphasis on realistic depictions of the Maruyama school.

激流から天に昇る「龍」は、「登竜門」の古事をイメージした作品で、困難な状況を乗り越え、出世に成功し、高い地位に登り詰める姿を表しています。
狩野派の華やかな画風や円山派の写生を重んじる描き方を参照しながら、生命力溢れる作品に仕上げました。

This dragon ascending towards the sky from a strong current was inspired by an ancient legend, which says a carp that successfully travels up the severe current at the Dragon’s Gate can become a dragon. It expresses the sense of overcoming difficult circumstances to achieve higher positions and more success.

Of the four mythical beasts and birds that are said to appear in peaceful times, the qilin, phoenix, tortoise and dragon, I painted a qilin and a blue dragon together.
